Advent Liturgy & Creative Arts Expo

Just a reminder that this Friday the 1st of December is the Advent Liturgy and Creative Arts Expo.

Kindy are running the Advent liturgy and have asked if the Year 5 Buddies could bring in a torch for the Liturgy. We ask that the students bring their torch in by Thursday at the latest so we can practice with Kindy.

Thanks,

The year 5 team 🙂

Term 4 Week 8

Dear Year 5 Parents,

This is my last week as I will be going on Long Service Leave for the last two weeks of the term. I have recenty had a special birthday and my family are spoiling me. I am going on a trip to London, Paris, Germany and Rome. I have never been oversees before! Very excited.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Year 5. The students have been so welcoming and caring. Special thanks to Mrs Callan and Miss Cole for their support and guidance. You have been a joy to work with.

5 Blue, you are all such wonderful people. You have taught me so much and I have loved seeing you become independent, cooperative learners. You have made me smile, laugh and enjoy each and every day. Thank you for your kindness.

Thanks to Mrs Stockey for believing in me to take on this exciting role in Year 5 this semester.  This Stage 3 role has also deepened my understanding of the English Syllabus, which will be so beneficial with my role as Literacy leader.

Mrs. Kylie Hogan will be taking 5 Blue for Week 9 and Week 10. Thank you so much. 5 Blue will be in excellent hands in these final two weeks.

See you all next year.

May God shower His love upon you all this Christmas.

This Monday, we will have the forms for the students to fill out to express their interest for 2018 leadership. These students will be writing their speeches in class this week. The remaining students will also be reflecting upon and writing their thoughts and ideas about leadership in a creative way. WRITING:

We are very excited about ALL our Year 5 student’s maturity and taking responsibility for their learning, especially with their writing. We are having ‘chats’ with each student about ‘where to next’ regarding their writing skills. They are listening, taking on the teacher’s advice and REALLY wanting to improve their writing.  Parents, ask your child about this. We should have finished these ‘chats’ by the end of the week. What great kids!!!!!

CYBER SAFETY

TIP: Everyone should change their passwords regularly and never share them with anyone.

PBS4L

All students should remember to be in the right place at the right time. This is for their safety. If a student is on the friary, they stay on the friary. If a student is on the netabll court, they stay on the netball court. Parents, please know that if it is too HOT, the teachers will make the decision, along with Mrs Stockey, if the children need to play in a shaded, cool place.

We have been having discussions with the Year 5 students about being respectful with one another and the staff at OLOR. This also includes our wonderful casual staff. We are wanting the students to accept a teacher’s  decision, in the classroom and on the playground, and if they have a valid question/concern, to wait for an appropriate time to have a polite, respectful chat. Occasioanlly we see some (very few) students ask why in a rude/disrespectful manner and even yell the word ‘what’ . This is not acceptable. The students have been involved in these discussions and accept and understand  these school expectations.

Here at OLOR, the majority of our students are respectful and well mannered.  We are very blessed to teach such positive, happy children every day. We are very proud of them. Parents, thank you for your continued support.

We have also had discussions with all of Year 5 and Year 6 about our new Friary Agreement. This agreement outlines all the behaviours we should see on the playground whilst students are playing any game, especially soccer and football. Parents, we will share this agreement with you soon. These discussions were very positive with our students sharing some of their concerns about the playground, which we, the Year 5 teachers, will take to the PBS4L team (this team is led by Mrs. Swan, includes teachers from every grade,  Sr. Antoinette, Mrs. McManus and Mrs Stockey).

Week 6 Homework

Term 4 Week 6 Homework-1ci3a2x

Due Monday, 20th November.

Please submit homework in a book, or on paper. Thank you so much.

Week 5 Term 4

PBS4L

Our  school’s PBS4L focus is the  ‘buddy bench’ and ‘car park’ safety.

It is vital that we all remind our children about the reasons why we need them to sit still and be quiet in the afternoons as they wait to be picked up throught the kiss n drop procedure. The children are listening well to these reminders at school, if you could also give them a reminder we would appreciate it. It links again with our school’s expectations of :

RESPECT for ourselves

RESPECT for one another

The ‘buddy benches’ are a wonderful support for our students. If your child can not find their friend, it’s a great resource and support for them to use.

Cyber safety TIP

Thank you for your support with having the conversations with your child around being safe and responsible whilst using technology. We have noticed the students are more aware simply by listening to their conversations. If you as a parent have any concerns, please contact us. TIP: Keep having conversations around this life skill…..parents and children. Thank you.

Surf School

Thank you for all those who have returned the permission notes for ‘surf school’. Please keep sending them in.

PBL (Project Based Learning/Inquiry Learning)

The Stage 3 teachers visited a school last week where we were able to see PBL in action. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn from others and bring back  ideas for our school.

As we know, working collaboratively in teams is such an important skill for our children. It is also a challenging concept. We place the students in their small groups based on their strenghts and needs. For example, each group would have:

  1. Organiser. The organiser may motivate everyone and suggest who takes on jobs/roles/tasks. They need to listen and support each member
  2. Facilitator. The facilitator helps the group focus, and assures that all may participate and that none dominate. The facilitator should remain neutral.
  3. Recorder. Assign the role of recorder to someone who can listen and be objective and accurate.
  4. Speaker. The speaker/presenter is the member who shares the groups ideas/research.

EVERY CHILD WOULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ON ONE OF THESE ROLES, SO ALL OF OUR CHILDREN ARE LEARNING ALL OF THESE SKILLS/ROLES.

We will be explicitly teaching how to work in teams in a positive manner so all students have great learning experiences. We want our children to be ‘critical friends’ and to be supportive of one another.

Homework (Due Monday, 13th November)

Week 4 Term 4

Week 4! Can you believe we are this far into the term?

PBS4L

Our next focus will be ensuring the students are in the  “Right Place at the  Right Time”. We want our students to be safe at all times. So we are re teaching the school’s expectations of the student’s staying on their playground so they are being supervised at all times.

Kindergarten Buddies

On Monday, the Year 5 students will again be helping take care of their Kinder buddies whilst the Kindergarten teachers are involved with the Kindergarten Orientation. Thanks to the Year 5 teachers and students.

Cyber/ONLINE  TIPS

Don’t respond to any online or text messages sent by cyberbullies

SOCCER & FOOTBALL

We are presently working with our PBS4L staff team and our Year 5 students about making our soccer and football games safe and fair. Please encourage discussions around this issue. We are also reminding the students to use appropriate language whilst playing.  Thank you for your support.

Week 4 Homework (DUE Monday, 6th November)

Term 4 Week 4 Homework-2my9x0i

Week 3 Term 4

The children have all started their Christmas CRAFT. Thank you so much for sending in pins and sequins for the Christmas baubles. Thank you to Mrs Callan for purchasing extra sequins and pins for the students. We still need all the Year 5 students to have their own sequns and pins. Thank you once again.

The next two Mondays, the Year 5  students will be spending time with their Kinder buddies. This is due to the Kinder 2018 students coming to school for their Orientation and the Kinder teachers needing to be involved in this. So our gorgeous Year 5 students will be completing some craft, sharing their Parable Stories they wrote and created in our Parable Religion Studies, discussing the Rosary and making a decade of the Rosary with beads (MONTH OF ROSARY..OCTOBER) and generally having some quality time together. Our Year 5 children are wondeful to support the school in this way.

Technology TIPS!

PLEASE have a chat to your children about the following:

Tell the person to STOP…..

Reach out for help – especially if the behavior’s really getting to you.

In writing we are focussing on writing a sentence with dependent and independent clauses. The children are doing really well. Have a look at the homework this week to see what they are learning. They are also learning about using SIZZLING STARTS to hook their readers. Ask them about the Rule of 3, Dialogue, the Senses Grid.

MATHS……Multiplication and TABLES. They are getting faster and more accurate.

Term 4 Week 2

The Year 5 children settled into the new school term well. They are happy and relaxed. We have seen some excellent thinking in our PBL Science unit.

Thank you to those who stocked the student’s pencil cases. It was much appreciated. Please make sure the children have enough lead pencils, pens , a ruler, eraser and coloured pencils.

We are reminding the students about using technology with respect and maturity.

Last week we were focussing on not posting ANYTHING nasty or unkind on any online social media or game and then trying to retract that with a ‘JK”.

This week we would like the students to remember to take care of their iPads and devices. If you could remind your child to charge their device, place it in their bags that is not near their water bottle etc. We will also remind them to look after their ipads. Thank you for all your support.

Thank you to those who have sent their Christmas Bauble craft items in. The children need sequins and pins to create a Christmas decoration. We will supply the baubles. Many thanks.

Following our PBS4L, in Year 5, we are focussing on speaking with respect to one another at all times. If anyone speaks to another student or teacher with disrespect, we follow our school PBS4L policy:

  • we would have a calm chat to the student and give a warning
  • we would give another warning and depending on the severity of the disrespect we would either have another chat and warning. We will always contact you, the parent,  if the behaviour continues.

The children are writing with improved confidence and focussing on clauses and subordinate clauses in their writing. GREAT to see. GO Year 5. You are doing so well.

Week 1 Term 4

Welcome back. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your gorgeous children.

Please have a chat about Cyber Safety and using technology with respect with your children. We have noticed that the children use it with respect and follow the school’s guidelines most of the time, but can occasionally make mistakes. Childen need to learn and be reminded, God bless them.

We will post tips each week for you as parents to support your child with their responsible use of technology. Please know that these tips are just to encourage and remind our OLOR students about being Cyber Safe.

TIP: If anyone writes a negative comment about another person on any form of social media, then retracts the comment with ‘just kidding’ or ‘jk’ , this is deemed as online bullying.

Just a reminder about re stocking the Year 5 student’s pencil cases.

Could they have ample lead pencils, blue and red pens, erasers, sharpeners, a ruler, highlighters and any other stationery items they choose.

Also if you could be on the look out for the ‘Christmas baubles’ sequins and pins. We have the polystyrene balls.

Many thanks,

Year 5 Teachers.
